It’s a very rare occasion that I’ll ever mention Stoke on Trent in any of my posts, but the reality is that it was my homeland for a very long time before moving to London and definitely a place I hold dearly to my heart. Stoke has a very unfortunate reputation and most areas within Staffordshire follow this trend. However, there are a lot of historic and natural sites which don’t particularly get much press coverage and many times locals don’t even know that these places are available to them.
On one of my recent trips to Stoke to visit my parents, my mum did the usual, “should we go somewhere or do something?”
I answered with my usual, “yeah sure, what do you fancy doing?”
I full well knew that she was going to answer with something related to walking and going outdoors. Usually not my idea of fun…at all.
Nevertheless, we decided to go to Rudyard Lake in the town of Leek. This area of Staffordshire is often referred to as the Moorlands.
On a good day there is actually a few different activities that you can do at Rudyard Lake, usually you see a lot of people angling/fishing, taking a boat trip along the lake, canoeing, wildlife/bird watching and cycling. Believe it or not there is actually also a Rudyard Lake Steam Railway to look out for, but usually this is limited to summer months! All these activities are very reasonably priced.
However, if none of these things are your cup of tea, you can go for a great walk around the lake and woods, admire the beautiful scenery, get some clean air in your system (I live in London, this air was FRESH) and then actually get a real cup of tea! The café is located in the activity centre and is open 10am-5pm Monday to Friday during the summer months and until 6pm at weekends. During the period October to March it is open at the weekends only from 10am to 5pm. The cake selection is great and their hot chocolates are the die for, especially on a cold afternoon.
Although I wasn’t really that excited about going to Rudyard Lake, I left feeling extremely peaceful and actually much happier. The scenery around the lake is beautiful and the atmosphere is very welcoming. All the staff in the café were brilliant, and I really appreciated that they had a few younger members of staff who were doing some work experience.
Bottom line, if my mum asks me to go again, I’ll definitely be going again 🙂
